How long does it take for mold to grow after water damage?
Mold spores can germinate on wet drywall, carpet pad, or cardboard within 24 to 48 hours. You usually can't see it for another few days. Materials that are fully dry within 48 hours rarely grow mold. Past 72 hours wet, industry guidance treats porous material as contaminated.
Can I dry it myself?
For a small clean-water leak caught fast, yes. Fans, a dehumidifier, a closed room, and a moisture meter to confirm. For anything that soaked drywall, subfloor, or insulation, or any gray or black water, commercial drying and a moisture map are what get you to dry before the clock runs out.
What if it looks dry but smells?
The surface dries first. The inside of the wall, the carpet pad, and the subfloor stay wet much longer. A musty smell after a leak means something is still wet or already growing. A moisture meter or a pro with a thermal camera can find it without tearing things open.
Does insurance cover mold from a leak?
Often, if the leak was sudden and you acted quickly. Slow leaks and neglect are usually excluded. The clock matters to the adjuster too, so document the date and your drying efforts. Run the claim checker.
