Mold Insurance Claim Checker
Most policies do not pay for “mold.” They pay for a covered water event, then often cap mold as a sublimit. Answer three questions about cause, how long materials stayed wet, and your policy type.
Question 1 of 3
How did the water get in?
How long were materials wet?
What kind of policy do you have?
Your coverage likelihood
This is not a claim decision, a coverage opinion, or a bid. Only your insurer (and, if needed, a public adjuster or attorney) can interpret your policy. Sublimits, endorsements, and state rules vary.
Next steps
Get a documented inspection
Photos, moisture readings, and a written source-of-water note help a claim more than a guess about mold type. This is not a bid and not a promise of coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Does homeowners insurance cover mold?
Usually only when mold follows a sudden, accidental, covered water event (a burst pipe, a failed supply line, storm-driven roof damage) and you dry the area promptly. Gradual leaks, humidity, groundwater, and flood are typically excluded on an HO-3. Even when the water event is covered, mold is often capped by a sublimit, commonly $1,000 to $10,000.
Does a flood policy cover mold?
A National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private flood policy is what usually responds to flood and groundwater. A standard homeowners policy does not. Flood policies can still limit how much they pay for mold. See the flood mold guides.
What about sewage or a sump pump?
Sewer and sump backup is often excluded unless you bought a water-backup endorsement. That endorsement is separate from flood insurance and from the mold sublimit.
Should I still call if this checker says unlikely?
Coverage and cleanup are different questions. You still need the water stopped and the area dried. A documented inspection can establish the source if you later file, or if you decide not to file. Call 866-871-0209 for a no-obligation consultation.
