Chaetomium Mold: A Water-Damage Indicator

Chaetomium in a house is a water-damage indicator. It likes cellulose that stayed wet: the paper on drywall, wallpaper, ceiling tile, cardboard, and some wood. The smell is often musty or earthy. Colonies can look gray, olive, brown, or almost black, sometimes with a cottony or speckled face. Color is not a diagnosis. A lab names the genus. Finding it is not proof of a uniquely “toxic” species. It is proof that a leak, a flood, or a wet cavity lasted long enough to colonize paper. That is a remediation job more often than a wipe-down, because the food source is porous.

I am a licensed mold assessor. When a tape lift comes back Chaetomium, I stop talking about bathroom mildew and start talking about where the water entered and how much drywall has to come out.

Color is not a diagnosis

Dark growth on wet drywall gets called “black mold” in every group chat. Chaetomium, Stachybotrys, Cladosporium, Aspergillus niger, and dirt all live in that color range. CDC does not recommend routine sampling just to name household mold, and CDC has said it is generally not necessary to identify the species growing in a residence. You still sample here more often than on a window track, because Chaetomium is a building clue: cellulose stayed wet.

Species ID is lab work. A photo of a stained wall is not a lab.

EPA’s moisture line still governs: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Clean without fixing the water, “then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.”

What Chaetomium looks like

Early growth on paper can look pale or gray. Mature indoor colonies are usually darker: olive, gray-brown, or black. Texture is often cottony, woolly, or granular rather than slimy. On drywall paper you may see spotting that looks like it is in the paper, not sitting on the paint. Fruiting structures can look like tiny dark dots when a sample is viewed in the lab.

The odor is a practical field sign. Occupants describe a strong musty, earthy, or “wet newspaper” smell in a closet, a basement, or a room that had a leak. Smell is not a species ID. It is a reason to look behind the finish.

Compare black mold if you are trying to separate Stachybotrys, Aspergillus on dust and HVAC, Alternaria after shorter leaks, and Cladosporium on windows. The types of mold hub sorts by color because that is how people search.

Where it grows

Chaetomium is common in soil and decaying plant matter outdoors. Indoors it is a cellulose eater. It does not typically take over a dry, dusty house the way some xerophilic Aspergillus species can. It shows up where paper and wood stayed wet.

Wet drywall and wallpaper

This is the classic indoor site. A supply-line leak in a wall, a failed shower pan, a window that leaked into the cavity, or a roof leak into a ceiling. The paper facing is food. Growth often starts on the back of the board, which is why a small stain on the room side can hide a much larger colony. See mold on drywall and mold inside walls.

Ceiling tile, cardboard, and stored paper

Drop-ceiling tiles and boxes in a basement or garage colonize after a roof leak or a wet slab. EPA’s porous-material rule applies: “Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy.”

Wood and subfloors after flooding or a long leak

Framing can often be cleaned if it is sound. Particleboard, OSB that has swollen, and wet underlayment are another matter. Chaetomium on a subfloor after a water event is a reason to pull flooring and measure moisture, not to fog the room. See mold after a water leak and flood mold.

Not the usual window-track mold

I rarely recover Chaetomium as the main organism on a dry vinyl window track. If it is on the drywall return next to that window, the cavity was wet. That distinction matters for scope.

It can show up with other water-damage fungi in the same assembly. Finding Chaetomium does not rule Stachybotrys in or out. The lab result is a sample of what you sent, not a census of the whole house.

Health: CDC language, not a toxin slogan

CDC does not publish a consumer warning that treats Chaetomium as a unique household poison. CDC’s mold pages apply to damp indoor environments. “Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all.” For some people: stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or a skin rash. “People with asthma or who are allergic to mold may have severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung disease may get infections in their lungs from mold.”

EPA: molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). Allergic reactions are common. “Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold.” Irritation of eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs can occur in people who are not allergic.

The 2004 Institute of Medicine review found sufficient evidence linking indoor mold with upper respiratory symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people, and with asthma symptoms in people who already have asthma.

Some Chaetomium species can produce metabolites in laboratory research. That is not the same as diagnosing a toxin illness from a stained wall. Do not tell a healthy family they have been poisoned because a lab wrote Chaetomium on a report. Do not leave wet drywall in place because someone on a forum said it is “not as bad as black mold.” If you have health concerns, EPA says consult a health professional before starting cleanup.

Rare invasive infections from Chaetomium are described in medical literature in people with severe immune suppression. That is a hospital infectious-disease topic, not the expected outcome of a roof leak in a healthy household. CDC’s broader point on invasive mold infections is the same: most people, including many people with weakened immune systems, inhale mold spores without getting an invasive infection, and risk rises with severe immune suppression and high indoor mold loads.

When it is a remediation job

Because Chaetomium prefers wet paper, the EPA porous-material rule does more work than the Latin name.

EPA: “If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself.” That DIY window is for visible growth you can reach, usually on a hard surface, with the water already fixed. A 2-foot stain on drywall paper is not a hard surface. EPA: porous materials that are wet and have mold growing on them may have to be discarded. See DIY or professional.

Treat Chaetomium on building materials as a professional job when any of these are true, which is most of the time I see it.

  • It is on drywall, ceiling tile, insulation, carpet, or other porous goods. Removal under containment, not bleach.
  • The area is larger than about 10 square feet, or you cannot see the edges. EPA’s remediation guide uses limited containment for 10 to 100 square feet and full containment above that.
  • Hidden growth. EPA lists the back side of drywall, wallpaper, paneling, the top of ceiling tiles, and the underside of carpets and pads. Chaetomium lives in those places.
  • HVAC is involved. Less common as a coil organism than Cladosporium or Aspergillus, but if the system is part of the moisture problem, EPA says: “Do not run the HVAC system if you know or suspect that it is contaminated with mold.” See air duct cleaning.
  • Sewage or contaminated floodwater. Call a professional experienced with that water. See flood mold.
  • Asthma, mold allergy, or immune compromise in the home.

Painting, fogging, and bleach do not fix wet paper. EPA says chlorine bleach is not recommended as a routine mold cleanup practice. Read does bleach kill mold and can mold come back after remediation.

What it costs

You are usually paying to open a wet assembly, remove unsalvageable drywall and insulation, dry the cavity, and contain the dust. The genus on the report does not add a surcharge. The demolition does.

Typical mold remediation cost in 2026 is $1,200 to $3,750 for most homes, about $2,300 to $2,400 on average, or $10 to $25 per square foot of affected area. A single wet wall can sit in that band. Finished basements, attics, and jobs that include rebuild run higher. HVAC involvement, when it exists, is often $3,000 to $10,000. Whole-house work after a long leak or flood can reach $10,000 to $30,000.

Get a room-level estimate from the mold remediation cost calculator. Spend $300 to $600 on an independent mold inspection so contractors bid the same square footage. Hold final payment until clearance testing passes.

If the lab says Chaetomium, I look for the leak before I look up the species page. Someone left water on paper. That is the whole story in most houses.

Do not wipe it. Do not paint it. Find the water, open the cavity, throw out the paper that grew it, and dry what stays. The Latin name is a clue. The wet drywall is the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chaetomium mean I have a leak?

Usually, yes. It colonizes cellulose that stayed wet: drywall paper, wallpaper, ceiling tile, cardboard, and some wood. Everyday condensation on a cold window is a less typical site than a wet wall cavity.

Is Chaetomium toxic black mold?

No. It can look dark, which is why it gets lumped in with Stachybotrys. They are different genera. CDC does not treat a Chaetomium lab result as a toxin diagnosis. It is a water-damage indicator and a reason to remove wet porous material.

Can I bleach Chaetomium off drywall?

No. Drywall paper is porous. EPA says porous materials with mold growth may have to be discarded, and bleach is not recommended as a routine cleanup method. Surface stain removal leaves the colony in the paper.

Do I need a lab test?

CDC does not recommend sampling just to name household mold. With suspected water damage, a tape lift or bulk sample can confirm that a cellulose-degrading genus is present and support a written scope. Hidden growth, real-estate files, and clearance still need an inspector.

When is Chaetomium a professional remediation job?

When it is on drywall or other porous materials, when the area is larger than about 10 square feet, when growth is hidden in a cavity, when HVAC or sewage is involved, or when someone in the home has asthma or a weakened immune system. That is most indoor Chaetomium I see.
