Aspergillus is one of the most common indoor molds I recover from homes, and finding it is not a diagnosis of “toxic mold.” It grows on drywall paper, household dust, insulation, fabrics, and HVAC components whenever those materials stay damp. Color will not tell you the genus. A lab will. CDC is direct that most people breathe Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick, while people with weakened immune systems or lung disease are the ones at higher risk of aspergillosis. Indoor growth still means a moisture problem. Treat the water first, then decide whether the patch is a Saturday cleanup or a remediation job.
I am a licensed mold assessor. After more than 5,000 inspections, Aspergillus shows up in ordinary houses more often than the species people Google at 2 a.m. That is the point of this page: what it actually looks like, where it grows, what CDC and EPA say about health and cleanup, and when you should stop wiping and hire a contractor.
Homeowners send me photos labeled “black mold” that turn out to be Aspergillus niger. They send photos labeled “white mold” that turn out to be a young Aspergillus colony, or Penicillium, or salt. CDC does not recommend routine sampling just to name the fungus in a house, and CDC has said it is generally not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence. You clean what you can see, you throw out what you cannot clean, and you fix the water.
If you do sample, it is for a building reason: hidden growth you cannot see, a clearance test after a contractor finishes, an HVAC question, or a real-estate or landlord dispute that needs a written record. Species ID is lab work. A phone photo is not a lab.
EPA’s home guidance is the same whether the colony is Aspergillus, Cladosporium, or something else: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” If you clean up the mold but do not fix the water problem, “then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.”
Aspergillus is a genus, not one color. Different species look different, and the same species can change as it ages.

Texture is usually powdery or granular, not slimy. Slimy dark growth on wet drywall after a long leak is more often a different water-damage fungus. That still does not let you name it from a photo. Under a microscope, Aspergillus has a distinctive fruiting structure. That is why inspectors send tape lifts and swabs to a lab instead of guessing in the hallway.
Aspergillus is common outdoors in soil and decaying plant matter. Indoors it colonizes anything that holds dust and stays damp. I find it in four places more than anywhere else.
The paper facing on gypsum board is cellulose. A slow plumbing leak, a window that weeps, or a roof leak that never quite dried will grow Aspergillus on that paper, often on the back side first. You see a stain, a musty closet, or a baseboard that looks dirty. The colony is frequently larger than the stain. Read mold on drywall and mold inside walls.
It grows in settled dust on cold walls, in carpet that stayed wet, on upholstered furniture, and in cardboard stored in a damp garage or closet. EPA is blunt about porous goods: “Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy.”
Cooling coils, drain pans, blower housings, and internally lined ductwork collect condensate and dust. That is a food source. Aspergillus is one of the genera we recover from air handlers. EPA’s instruction is not optional: “Do not run the HVAC system if you know or suspect that it is contaminated with mold - it could spread mold throughout the building.” If the insulation inside a duct is wet or moldy, EPA says it cannot be cleaned effectively and should be removed. Tile and grout get surface growth that you can usually clean. The problem is the drywall behind the tile, the vanity kick, and the ceiling under a bath fan that does not vent outside. Those are porous, and they are often hidden.
Do not scare yourself with a genus name. CDC’s aspergillosis pages are written for a reason, and they are also written with a limit.

Aspergillosis is a group of illnesses, not one disease.
On indoor mold in general, CDC’s mold pages say exposure to damp and moldy environments “may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all.” For some people, mold can cause a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or a skin rash. “People with asthma or who are allergic to mold may have severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung disease may get infections in their lungs from mold.”
The 2004 Institute of Medicine review, which CDC cites, found sufficient evidence to link indoor mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people, and with asthma symptoms in people who already have asthma. That is the evidence base. It is not a claim that every Aspergillus colony is “toxic.” Some Aspergillus species can produce mycotoxins in the lab. That is not the same as proving a given stain in your closet is poisoning you. Species ID, toxin testing, and medical diagnosis are different jobs. If you have health concerns, EPA says to consult a health professional before starting cleanup.
The genus does not change EPA’s size and material rules.
EPA: “If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself.” That assumes a visible patch on a surface you can reach, a moisture source that is already fixed, and no special health situation in the house. Bleach is not a plan. EPA says chlorine bleach “is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup.” Killing what you can see on a porous surface leaves the roots in the paper. Read does bleach kill mold.
Species does not set the price. Square footage of affected material, how much has to come out, whether the HVAC is involved, and whether rebuild is included do.
Professional mold remediation cost for most homes in 2026 runs about $1,200 to $3,750, with a national average around $2,300 to $2,400, or roughly $10 to $25 per square foot of affected area. A small bathroom job can be $500 to $1,000. A contaminated HVAC system is often $3,000 to $10,000. Whole-house work after a long leak or flood can reach $10,000 to $30,000.

If a lab report says Aspergillus, you have a common indoor fungus and a moisture source, not a rare plague. I have walked houses where the homeowner was terrified of the Latin name and missed the dripping coil pan. I have also walked houses where a healthy family wanted to bleach the closet while a transplant patient was sleeping in the next room. Those are different jobs.
Name the water. Measure the area. Decide porous versus hard surface. If someone in the home is immunocompromised, get the building assessed instead of arguing about color. The genus is useful. The leak is the problem.
No. “Toxic black mold” is a marketing phrase usually aimed at Stachybotrys. Aspergillus can look dark, especially A. niger, and it is a different genus. Color does not identify species, and CDC does not treat ordinary household Aspergillus as a toxin event for healthy people.

Damp indoor growth can still irritate the nose, throat, and lungs and can worsen asthma in people who are allergic to mold. Invasive aspergillosis is a concern mainly for people with weakened immune systems or serious lung disease.
CDC does not recommend routine sampling just to name household mold. You need a lab if you are documenting hidden growth, clearing a remediation job, checking an HVAC system, or putting a written record in a sale or landlord file. Species ID is lab work, not a photo.
If the patch is smaller than about 10 square feet, on a hard surface, and the water is already fixed, EPA says you can usually handle it yourself with an N-95, gloves, and goggles. Porous materials, HVAC involvement, hidden growth, sewage, or a high-risk occupant change that answer.
The air handler moves air through the whole house. EPA says not to run a system you know or suspect is contaminated. Internally lined ducts that are wet or moldy cannot be cleaned effectively and should be replaced.
