Alternaria indoors is a moisture problem with a strong allergy file, not a color you can diagnose from a photo. It is a common outdoor fungus that colonizes showers, window frames, carpets, and drywall after leaks. Colonies are often dark green, olive, gray, or almost black, with a velvety or slightly fuzzy face. Color is not a species ID. A lab is. CDC frames indoor mold around damp buildings, allergy, and asthma. Mayo Clinic lists Alternaria among the molds that commonly trigger allergies. Indoor growth still means the surface stayed wet long enough to colonize. Small hard-surface patches can be DIY under EPA’s 10 square foot rule. Growth on drywall, in HVAC, or behind a leak is a remediation job.
I am a licensed mold assessor. After a roof leak or a failed shower pan, people send me photos of dark growth and ask if it is “the toxic kind.” Alternaria is one of the genera we actually recover in those rooms. The Latin name does not make it a toxin diagnosis. It does tell you the water was real.
Dark green-gray spots in a shower look like Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus niger, mildew, and soap scum depending on the week. CDC does not recommend routine sampling just to name household mold, and CDC has said it is generally not necessary to identify the species growing in a residence. You sample when the growth may be hidden, when you need a report for a sale or a landlord, when the HVAC is in question, or when you are clearing a contractor.
Species ID is lab work. Do not pay anyone who “identifies” Alternaria from a hallway glance.
EPA still leads with moisture: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” If you clean up the mold but do not fix the water problem, “then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.”
Young growth can be gray-white. Mature indoor colonies are usually dark: olive, green-gray, brown, or black, often with a lighter edge. Texture is velvety, suede-like, or finely fuzzy, not the slimy film you get on soaked drywall after weeks of standing wet.
Spores of Alternaria are relatively large compared with many indoor molds. That is a microscope fact, not something you can use with a phone camera.

Compare Cladosporium on windows and HVAC, Aspergillus on dust and drywall, Chaetomium after longer water damage, and black mold if you are trying to separate Stachybotrys from every other dark stain. The types of mold hub is useful for color matching. It is not a lab.
Alternaria lives on plants, soil, and decaying vegetation. Spores ride in on outdoor air, clothing, and HVAC intake. Outdoor air can contain Alternaria even when the house is clean. Indoor growth on a surface is different. Growth means that surface stayed damp.
This is the classic indoor site: shower walls, grout, the ceiling over the stall, and the wall behind a poorly sealed surround. A working bath fan that ducts outside, run during and after the shower, is the control. Tile and glass are usually DIY. The drywall and the backer behind a leaking surround are not. Condensation on cold glass wets the sash, the stool, and the drywall return. Wood sills rot and colonize. Vinyl tracks hold water. I probe those returns with a moisture meter more often than I sample them. The stain on the paint is the last thing that showed up.
After a supply-line leak, a failed shower pan, or a roof leak, Alternaria is one of the genera that shows up on cellulose and dust. It does not require the prolonged saturation that Stachybotrys and Chaetomium prefer, which is why you can find it after a leak that was “only wet for a few days.” If the drywall is soft, stained through, or still above normal moisture, treat it as damaged material, not a stain. Outdoor Alternaria is pulled onto filters and coils. Indoor growth on a coil or in a drain pan still means condensate and dust. EPA: “Do not run the HVAC system if you know or suspect that it is contaminated with mold.” Wet internal duct lining gets replaced. Read air duct cleaning.
Mayo Clinic lists Alternaria among the molds that commonly cause allergies, alongside Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. In people who are sensitized, exposure is a hay-fever and asthma story: sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, cough, wheeze, chest tightness.
CDC does not publish a consumer page that treats Alternaria as a unique household poison. CDC’s mold pages apply to damp indoor environments generally. “Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all.” For some people, mold can cause a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or a skin rash. “People with asthma or who are allergic to mold may have severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung disease may get infections in their lungs from mold.”
EPA: inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. “Allergic reactions to mold are common.” “Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold.” Irritation can occur even in people who are not allergic.
The 2004 Institute of Medicine review, cited by CDC, found sufficient evidence linking indoor mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people, and with asthma symptoms in people who already have asthma.
Some Alternaria species can produce metabolites in laboratory conditions. That is not a license to tell a homeowner the shower is “toxic.” Do not skip cleanup because the genus is “only” an allergen, and do not invent a toxin crisis from a dark stain. EPA: “If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself.” Grout, tile, glass, and metal window frames usually qualify when you can see the whole patch, the leak or steam source is already fixed, and you wear an N-95, gloves, and goggles. Chlorine bleach is not the method. EPA says it is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup. On grout it may lighten the stain and leave the moisture. On drywall it does not save the paper. Read does bleach kill mold.

Dark growth in a shower after a leak is a water-and-allergy problem. I would rather you spend the weekend on the fan, the grout, and a moisture meter than on a Facebook thread about toxins.
If the drywall is soft, if the stain is bigger than a 3-by-3 patch, or if the air handler is involved, stop wiping. If anyone in the house has asthma that flares at home, treat indoor Alternaria as a reason to dry the building, not as a reason to panic about a Latin name.
